Slovolomka — a Serbian Wordle

For learners of Serbian

Three five-letter Serbian words a day: easy, medium and hard. Guess any of them in six tries. Every accepted guess is a real dictionary word with its translation, and each game ends on the dictionary entry of the answer.

How to play

Every day hides three five-letter Serbian words: an easy one from the thousand most frequent words, a medium one from the next fifteen hundred and a hard one from the next twenty-five hundred. Play one or all three. Six tries each. After each try the tiles change colour: blue for the right letter in the right place, yellow for a letter that is in the word but elsewhere, grey for a letter that is not in the word.

The answer is vrata (door). The guess krava (cow): r, a and the last a are in place, v is in the word, k is not.

Above the board sits a sentence from the dictionary entry with a gap where the word goes: at once on the easy level, after the first row on medium, after the third on hard. A guess can be any form of any Serbian word (knjigu, kućom), not only the dictionary form. A word that is neither in Wiktionary nor in the dictionary doesn't use up a try.

New words appear at midnight, your local time, the same for everyone, so you can share your result without spoilers: the game number, the level, the grid of squares and the link.

What makes it a learners’ game

  • Three words for your level. Easy from the Top 1000 for your first months, medium and hard once easy stops being a challenge.
  • A sentence instead of an empty board. Know the word? Type it. Don’t? Open the sentence’s translation; the hint adds a 💡 to your result.
  • Open a letter, Wheel-of-Fortune style. Two letters a game: one may be opened after the second row, the other after the fifth. Each opened letter is a 💡 too.
  • A misspelling is a lesson too. Type kniga and the game offers knjiga with its translation; one tap uses the word.
  • A translation under every guess. An accepted word shows its dictionary form and translation at once; one tap opens the entry. Six tries, six words.
  • Word card, warm-up, “My words”. After the game: stress, pronunciation, an example and the entry. Before it: recall yesterday’s word. In the statistics: every word of the day you played, with links.

Lj, Nj, Dž and the two scripts

In Serbian Latin lj, nj and dž are written with two characters but are one letter each; Cyrillic writes them as љ, њ, џ. In the game such a letter takes one tile: knjiga is five letters, k·nj·i·g·a.

The on-screen keyboard has separate lj, nj and dž keys. On a physical keyboard type the two letters in a row, l then j, and they merge into one tile. The switch above the board shows the tiles and the keyboard in Latin or Cyrillic; the choice is remembered.

Questions

Why three words and not one?

No single word fits every learner: a hard word is useless to a beginner and an easy one is dull for an advanced learner. The easy word always comes from the thousand most frequent words; the hard one is for people who already read Serbian. One game number, results per level.

Is this Wordle in Serbian?

Yes, it is Wordle in Serbian, made for learners: the words are Serbian, the interface is Russian and English, every guess shows its translation, a sentence from the dictionary entry sits above the board, and the game ends on the entry of the answer. Wordle is a trademark of The New York Times Company; this game is not affiliated with it.

And from Rečko and the other Serbian games?

Those are made for native speakers: no translations, no explanation of the word, no links to a dictionary. This one is for people learning Serbian.

Why isn’t my word accepted?

Accepted guesses are forms of words from Wiktionary and from the dictionary’s entries. If your word is close to one of them, the game offers it: kniga → knjiga, sreca → sreća. Proper names and very rare words may be missing; such a word doesn’t use up a try.

Does a game with hints count?

Yes. The result goes into your statistics, with one 💡 per hint: the sentence’s translation and each opened letter. The spelling suggestion is not a hint.

When do the words change?

At midnight local time. The game number is the same everywhere, so friends in different time zones can compare results.

How do I keep my streak on a new phone?

Your statistics live in the browser. In the statistics window, tap “Save progress” to get a link that carries your whole history. Open it on another device and the page offers to transfer your games. No sign-up, no server.

How to play

Three five-letter Serbian words a day: easy, medium, hard. Six tries each. Blue: right place. Yellow: in the word. Grey: not in the word. Lj, Nj, Dž are one tile.

Above the board sits a sentence from the dictionary entry with a gap: at once on easy, after the first row on medium, after the third on hard. Hints: the sentence’s translation and “Open a letter” (Wheel-of-Fortune style: one after the second row, another after the fifth); each adds a 💡 to your result.

Any form of any Serbian word is a valid guess. Under an accepted guess you see its translation and a link to its entry.
