1. (piece of news) information; message; news
   Dobili smo obavest da je let otkazan. — We received word that the flight was cancelled.
   U pismu je bila kratka obavest o njegovom dolasku. — The letter contained a brief notice of his arrival.
2. (official) notice; notification
   Stigla mi je obavest iz banke. — I got a notification from the bank.

In Serbia, the usual words are «obaveštenje» (notice, message) or «informacija» (information). «Obavest» is also standard Serbian but less common; the more usual synonyms are preferable for active use. The Croatian form is «obavijest».
