   Mnoge porodice tamo žive u bedi. — Many families there live in poverty.
   Rat je zemlju doveo do bede. — The war reduced the country to misery.
2. colloq. (of a situation, thing) something pathetic or worthless; a disgrace
   Taj film je prava beda. — That film is really pathetic.
   Plata im je prava beda. — Their pay is a real joke.
3. (of misfortune) trouble; misfortune
   Navukao je sebi bedu na vrat. — He brought trouble on himself.
   Snašla ih je velika beda. — Great misfortune befell them.

«Biti u bedi» (locative) means to be in poverty or in distress; «pasti u bedu» (accusative) means to fall into poverty. Colloquial «u bedu sam» ('I feel down') comes from a different noun, bed; see bedak.
