Questions about the reader

Answers to questions about the Serbian text reader: how to use it, what the frequency bar and the "Rare words" button show, how to take the words to Anki, where your text goes and how long it can be.

How do I use the reader?

Paste a Serbian text into the box (a letter, a news story, a chapter of a book) and read. Tap any word: you see which word it is a form of (kuću → kuća, accusative), its meaning and a link to its dictionary entry. A long text is split into pages: turn them with the arrows under the text, a swipe on a phone, or the ← and → keys on a computer.

What does the bar "The text's words by frequency" show?

The share of the text's words that are among the 1,000 most common Serbian words, the next 2,000, the first 10,000, and how many are rarer or not in the dictionary. Frequency comes from a list of Serbian subtitles (OpenSubtitles): the words of everyday speech. The bigger the share of the first thousand, the easier the text. Names (a capitalised word in the middle of a sentence) are not counted.

What does the "Rare words" button do?

It highlights the words beyond the first thousand in three shades of yellow: the darker, the rarer. That shows which words of the text are worth learning first. It is off by default so that nothing gets in the way of reading, and the reader remembers your choice.

How do I take the words to Anki?

Every word you tap goes into the list "My words": the button with their number appears above the text after the first tap. There you can remove what you don't need, copy the words with their meanings, or download a CSV file: the word as it stands in the text, its dictionary form, the name of the form, the meaning, the sentence from the text (with the word in bold) and a link to the entry. In Anki choose File → Import, open the file and map its columns onto the fields of your own note type. Spreadsheets such as Google Sheets open the file too. Like the text, the list is kept only in this tab: download it before you close the tab.

Where does my text go?

Nowhere. The text is processed in your browser, and its words are looked up in the dictionary's files, which the browser downloads from the site like images. The text and your word list are kept only in this tab, so that they are still there when you open an entry and come back, and they are gone when the tab is closed.

How long can the text be?

Up to 200,000 characters, about a hundred book pages. Pages come in two sizes: book (a few paragraphs, about a phone screen) and large; switch them with the "Aa" button, which also sets the text size. A page never ends in the middle of a sentence.
