1. to console; to comfort
   Majka je utešila dete koje je plakalo. — The mother comforted the crying child.
   Ništa ne može da je uteši. — Nothing can console her.
2. (utešiti se) to take comfort; to console oneself
   Utešio se mišlju da će sledeće godine biti bolje. — He took comfort in the thought that next year would be better.

The imperfective is tešiti; utešiti se often takes the instrumental: utešiti se mišlju.
