Reci mi šta si kupio. — Tell me what you bought.
colloq. (asking for a reason) why

Šta se smeješ? — Why are you laughing?
colloq. (in questions and negations) anything; something

Ima li šta novo? — Is there anything new?

In Serbia "šta" is the everyday form; "što" more often means "why" or sounds more formal.
